6th grader Ella Veysel participated in the inaugural year of the TED Ed Club, hosted by the Discovery Museum in Harrisonburg. The program was spearheaded by Amy Leap Miller. Ella worked all year with 11 other middle school students across the county and from Harrisonburg to develop "ideas worth sharing" and to learn how to give an effective and compelling presentation. The JMU Debate Team assisted in their preparation, mentoring the students along the way.
Each student came up with their own topic of interest, researched it, and gave a culminating 5 minute presentation at JMU's Grafton-Stovall Theater on April 25. After spending much of her childhood in Cyprus, an island nation off the coast of Turkey, Ella decided to share on the importance of learning a second language before the age of 12, hoping to influence Rockingham County to develop a dual-language program in the elementary schools.
