ROCKINGHAM COUNTY APPOINTS NEW SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS
Harrisonburg, Va. – Tonight, the Rockingham County School Board, by unanimous vote, approved the appointment of Dr. Oskar Scheikl, Ph.D., as Superintendent of Schools. He will assume his new duties as the school division’s chief executive and administrative officer on July 1, 2017. Scheikl is currently the Director of Information Management for Rockingham County Public Schools.
“I am humbled to be chosen to lead this amazing school division,” Scheikl said. “As a young teacher who had only moved to the United States a few years earlier, this community gave me a chance as a classroom teacher, and I have continued to work to earn that trust every day. I am focused on collaboration, transparency, and most of all service to our students and the broader school community of Rockingham County. As a school division, our goal is to provide a learning environment that fosters each student’s highest potential, not only as a student, but as a member of the community. I am looking forward to supporting our dedicated teachers, administrators, and staff as we work with the School Board and this community to continue providing excellence and innovation in education.”
Scheikl has spent his entire public education career in Rockingham County Schools. He began his service in 1995 as a high school social studies teacher and soccer coach at Broadway High
School. In 2000, he advanced to Administrative Software Implementation Specialist and was later then promoted to Supervisor of Student Information. In July 2011, he was appointed to his current position as Director of Information Management, which has brought him into ongoing collaboration with a broad array of instructional leaders and staff, programs, and processes that impact student achievement and other school division operations.
Scheikl received his undergraduate and master’s degrees from James Madison University and doctorate in education from the University of Virginia. While a student at UVA, he was honored in 2007 with the William H. Seawell Memorial Award. Previous to these degrees, he studied 6 years at the University of Salzburg, Austria, in the fields of History and Law. Scheikl has 2 daughters who are recent graduates of Spotswood High School and attend college in Virginia.
“Throughout his career, Dr. Scheikl has demonstrated an innovative approach to learning and a deep commitment to positive student achievement. He is known for his earnest, sustained commitment to excellence through his effective listening and communication skills and a very strong work ethic” said School Board Chair Renee Reed. “As the Director of Information Management, he has been instrumental in the introduction, planning and implementation of the Digital Conversion comprehensive 5-year plan to provide digital resources for learning to students and staff. This important initiative, and others he has worked on exemplify his visionary leadership and ability to energize and bring together all stakeholders to enhance the educational opportunities for Rockingham County students which is evident in the strong support of our Board of Supervisors and community. The Board looks forward to working with Dr. Scheikl in his new role, drawing on his unique experiences and his talents that align extraordinarily well for our school division as we help our students and staff look to the future of education and lifelong learning.”
In November 2016, the Rockingham County School Board engaged the services of BWP & Associates to assist with a nationwide search for a new superintendent with the demonstrated ability to carry forth the educational and administrative goals along with meeting the exemplary leadership expectations of the school division. Working with BWP, the Board solicited input via focus groups, community forums and an online survey to help identify characteristics sought in the new superintendent and to develop a leadership profile. More than 24 candidates applied for the position. School Board Vice-Chair Dan Breeden, with sentiments echoed by all School Board members, commented that “among the applicants, Dr. Scheikl impressed us with how well his outstanding qualifications aligned with the leadership profile, and we look forward to witnessing even more achievements for our school division under his leadership.”
Scheikl will succeed Dr. Carol S. Fenn, who announced her retirement on September 24, 2016 and will conclude 10 years of service in that role. Fenn will continue to serve until June 30, 2017 and will work with Scheikl and the Board for a smooth leadership transition.
